Crisis In The CNMI

Humm, Im trying to stay away from talking politics but I thought my familia and friends should know whats going on out here in Saipan. Saipan is going through some really tough times right now and is in the midst of transformation. Tourism is down, there are talks of federalization of the CNMI minimum wage from $3.05-$7.25, and now there is the possibility of the garment factories exiting Saipan. The garment factories account for about 35% of the revunue in Saipan. Thats a big ouch for Saipan and we are concerned about how Saipan will survive. I feel bad because I use to be a brand name whore. I used to buy alot of AF, AE, Hollister clothing. But living out here and seeing what life is like for these workers that come from different countries to try and make a better life . . . well lets just say it makes me think twice about buying those name brand clothes.

I personally think it would benefit Saipan in the long run if the Federal Government steps in. I think that this situation has been going on long enough. I think Saipan either lacks the ability or the will to do whats necessary to make changes. Blame it on the businessman, politicians, and those who voted or didnt vote for them. So yes, hard times are ahead. I just think that the migrant workers that work so hard to make a living deserve more than just being second class citizens.
